6 Essential Gadgets for Study Abroad

While studying abroad we want to make sure we cherish the coolest moments, but we also want to make sure that we are able to fully immerse ourselves in our study abroad experience. There are ways that technology can bring about a positive and beneficial experience.

Cellphone – If you are not mindful, using your cell phone abroad can be very expensive. Before you leave for your trip, you want to make sure to contact your cell phone provider and figure out which international plan works best for you or you can unlock your phone and buy a SIM card to make local and international calls. If you choose to suspend your cell phone service, there are still many ways to stay connected with friends and family through apps such as WhatsApp, Viber, Skype and Facetime, as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection. Aside from being able to make calls and send messages over a WIFI connection, with a smartphone you have access to numerous apps to help make traveling easier while abroad.

Portable Charger – If you are going on a city tour or having a long weekend outing, a portable charger can save the day. These tend to be expensive, but will definitely save you in the long run because you will be able to capture photos all day and not have to worry about getting lost because of a dead phone. Also, look into an additional adapter so you are able to charge all your electronics with only one charger.

Selfie-stick – If you want to avoid having to constantly ask strangers to take pictures of your group, or if you are traveling independently, the selfie stick is a great investment.  The selfie-stick ensures that you are able to get a picture you like. However, selfie-sticks are considered a safety-hazard in many tourist spots, the selfie-stick can be very helpful and enjoyable

Digital Camera – Memories fade but pictures don’t. Capturing memories on your cell phone camera is great for sharing to social media, but if you plan on developing your photos plan on bringing a digital camera. A digital camera will insure the quality of your photos are able to create permanent memories. Whichever route you decide to take be sure to back up your photos in case you lose your camera or phone.

Portable Luggage Scale – While you’re studying abroad and already balling on a budget, the last thing you want to hear about is charges for over-sized luggage. A scale will save you lots of money and heartache at the airport, so you’re not forced to empty items out of your luggage in order to make the weight limit.

Dual Wattage International Converter – If you are studying outside of the United States, then a converter may be necessary for your trip. If you do not want to fry your favorite electronics, it is important to research if the electronics you plan to bring will need a converter and which voltage different countries use. To be on the safe side, it is best to bring a universal adapter that will work for different regions.

While these are essential for studying abroad, it is necessary to remember not make any of these items destructive obsessions. The tools should be used to enhance our experiences not barrier our living abroad.
