They say… 19.1 million students will enroll this year

They say college enrollment is up - photo copyright 2011 Rick Sherrell

According to statistics, about 19.1 million students will enroll in degree-granting institutions this year (2011-2012). That’s up about 25% since 2000. That’s what they say anyway. Who’s ‘they?’ — The National Center for Educational Statistics.

PS. The number of women in college outnumber men and the number of Hispanics now outnumbers Blacks.

How’s enrollment at your school?

Do you think your enrollment numbers have been affected by the economy?

Are your classrooms filling up earlier than you expected?

Are your classes larger than expected?

Is your campus becoming more or less diverse?

What’s your take?

Just curious and would love to see your comments below.

PEACE.
Rick

Rick, this is interesting stuff! The question also needs to be asked: How do we help all of these students maximize their educational experience? Now, more than ever, college is about more than “just classes”. Students need to develop positive leadership skills, become involved in service learning, and engage and connect with their school and fellow students. Plus, how do you do this for students in distance and on-line learning programs? I suggest through programs, workshops, seminars, etc. that allows students to come to a central place and learn from experts and interact with other students. This means campus programming has to have a point: spending student fees on programs that inform, as well as entertain!

    • Dave, All excellent points. As a provider of student leadership Training are you seeing more or less students engaged in the things you outline? If enrollment is up, are you seeing more students engaged in leadership activities? Are you seeing more students volunteering Community Service Projects? What are you seeing as you visit campuses across the country advocating service leadership?
